Decentralized Messaging Apps Surge Amid Global Unrest

Quick Summary: Blockchain-based messaging apps are surging in popularity as governments block centralized platforms across the Middle East, Asia, and Africa.

Decentralized, blockchain-based messaging and social media applications have experienced a notable rise in interest over the past year, driven by civil unrest and communication blackouts across the Middle East, Asia, and Africa. Search interest in decentralized social media has climbed 145% over the last five years, according to data from Exploding Topics. Decentralized peer-to-peer messaging service Bitchat recorded spikes in downloads during protests in Madagascar, Uganda, Nepal, Indonesia, and Iran in recent months.

Shane Mac, the CEO of XMTP Labs, told Cointelegraph that public trust is shifting away from closed corporate platforms toward open protocols. XMTP Labs is a startup focused on developing decentralized communication technology. Mac said that global unrest is prompting more people to explore privacy-focused messaging alternatives. He described the current moment as a turning point, arguing that a new technological foundation is needed after 15 years of centralized dominance.

The trend is unfolding against a backdrop of increasing government restrictions on mainstream apps. WhatsApp, the messaging platform owned by social media company Meta, confirmed in February that Russia had proceeded with blocking the app, making it inaccessible without a VPN or similar workaround. Mac noted that when entire countries shut down individual apps, it underscores the need for infrastructure that cannot be taken offline so easily.

Decentralized platforms are generally hosted across networks that span multiple countries, with servers managed collectively by their participants. This structure contrasts with centralized services, which run on a single set of servers controlled by one company or entity and can be blocked or taken offline more readily. Mac explained that decentralized networks are typically harder to disable because they lack a single point of failure, making them more resilient during periods of political turmoil.

Mac highlighted one example of grassroots innovation in this space, describing how a developer took the open-source Bitchat client and integrated the XMTP network into it after their app was shut down in their country. The combination of mesh networking and decentralized infrastructure meant the application no longer depended on any single point of failure. He added that the technology continues to improve as developers and users push its boundaries further.

Market research firm 360 Research Reports predicted in a March 2 report that the blockchain messaging market will grow significantly over the coming years. The firm cited global demand for enhanced privacy and security in communications as a primary driver of that growth. The forecast aligns with the broader pattern of rising user interest that platforms like Bitchat have already begun to reflect.

Despite the momentum, Mac does not expect decentralized platforms to displace their centralized counterparts entirely. He suggested the two types of platforms will likely coexist, drawing a parallel to how SMS and email persisted even after encrypted messaging emerged. Exploding Topics also found that social media users now divide their time across an average of 6.75 platforms per month, suggesting audiences are already comfortable using multiple services simultaneously. Mac emphasized that developers will need to continue innovating to sustain the current growth in decentralized adoption.
